Our bodies are naturally self-cleaning machines, but unfortunately, our homes are not! So Moms, it's time to give your living room a good detox!
Maintaining a sparkly clean living room seems impossible to most moms because it is an area of the house that functions as a gathering place, which sometimes translates to toys flying here and there, or dirty socks lying at every corner. Right?
Are there really ways to keep your living room sparkling without the use of harsh chemicals?
In this Home Detox Series, I've got your living room detox covered - from switching to natural cleaning products to using essential oils - these solutions will help you keep your living room healthy without spending hours scrubbing. Because who has time for that?!
Check out my foolproof ways to make your living room a non-toxic place today!
Detox Your Living Room with these Easy Steps:
1. Clean Sweep the Living room
It might sound like a lot of work to move every piece of furniture for a thorough detox, but remember that even the cleanest homes can unknowingly be hiding toxins in the last place you'd expect!
So, start simple and give your living room a good cleaning!
Dust buildup in your home is no laughing matter. From fabrics to dust mites, your home may be full of things that could make it hard to breathe. Forget the old-school feather duster - it's time to get serious about dusting! And wipe away dust with a damp or microfiber cloth to make your living room sparkling.

2. Trap the Toxins
If you have kids and pets, you know that dust, dirt, and pet hair are always a battle. A vacuum cleaner is our MVP when keeping our living room clean. Time to retire your old one if it already has a clogged-up filter. You could just be blowing contaminants back into the air.
Investing in a quality vacuum might sound expensive but it is essential! Make sure you choose one with a HEPA filter to capture even the smallest particles.
Check out this list to help you decide which one to get! I love my Dyson to vacuum up crumbs after lunch… 🙂
3. Detox your Carpet
Rugs and carpets can be a haven for dirt, germs, and particles that you don’t want your family to be exposed to. When cleaning your carpets, you should only use natural products that won’t trap more materials in the fibers - potentially causing more harm.
Why not whip up some non-toxic DIY carpet cleaner using ingredients that are already sitting in your pantry? All you need is some white vinegar, and you'll be on your way!
Need to turn it up a notch? Follow this recipe:
Natural Carpet Cleaner
Ingredients:
2 cups Baking soda
10 drops Purify Cleansing Blend
Instructions:
1. Add Purify to baking soda until combined
2. Sprinkle mixture over the carpet and let sit 1-2 hours. Vacuum.
3. Store remaining mixture in an airtight container for future use
Before you go on a full-on detox, always do a spot check to ensure your carpets won’t discolor. This is especially good for pet stains and smells…
4. Vacuum your Couch
Moms, if you've ever seen your couch and thought, "Oh no!"
Welcome to the club!
With food crumbs, sweat, and all kinds of stains, it's no surprise that our couches look worn down and worse – a hotbed for bacteria and viruses.
Take heart, mama! It's not impossible to get your couch looking like it just came out of the store with the right natural cleaners.
Before tackling any mess, take a look at the care tag first. This tag can provide information about your couch's fabric and how to best clean it. Find out more about these cleaning codes here!
I got three couch-savers for you, a Vacuum, a Microfiber cloth, and Baking soda!
Here’s the drill:
Vacuum away the crumbs and hair.
Use a damp microfiber cloth to clean any non-fabric surfaces.
Sprinkle baking soda on the fabric-upholstered sections, let it sit, and vacuum away the unpleasant odor.
5. Use Non-toxic Cleaners
Why not go the extra mile with a living room detox that goes beyond sudsy water and ammonia-laced wipes? Keep your family safe and avoid using products containing ammonia and chlorine which can cause respiratory issues and skin irritation.
Opt for non-toxic cleaners when wiping down all surfaces of your home. I found dōTERRA’s Multi-Purpose Surface Cleaner Concentrate super effective for non-porous surfaces. This plant-based formula also leaves a fresh scent.

6. Air Things Out
Open your windows and doors whenever possible. And if you're extra sensitive, you might even want to invest in an air purifier. We’re sticking by our Corway Airmega!
The cherry on top? Add some plants to your living room – they're great at keeping the air clean!
