Cloth diapers have grown in popularity over the past few years, and for a good reason. Not only are they more affordable than store-bought disposables, but theyâre also eco-friendly and reusable. Iâve used exclusively cloth diapers for both my babies from birth, including throughout two week-long road trips, so I like to consider myself something of an expert. đ
In this guide, weâll discuss the benefits of using cloth diapers, the different types of cloth diapers available, and how to launder them. With the right tips and tricks, switching to cloth diapers can be easy and hassle-free. Keep reading to get started!
Everything Moms Need to Know About Cloth Diapers
Why Choose Cloth Diapers?
Still trying to decide between disposable diapers and cloth baby diapers?
We know that it can be hard to choose between the convenience of disposables and the potential savings of cloth diapers.
I personally chose to use cloth diapers to reduce my childrenâs exposure to toxins, and it saves me money to boot!
Cloth diapering has come a long way over the years, too! It is now easier to use than before. Gone are the days of rubber pants and plastic covers! Today's cloth diapers come in different materials, styles, and sizes, making it easy to find the right fit for your baby.
In addition to saving money and being eco-friendly, I find it a more convenient option as I no longer need to make regular trips to the store to purchase diapers.
What are the Best Cloth Diapers to Consider?
If youâre new at cloth diapering and unsure of how it works, donât worry! Weâve all been there.
As Iâve said, there are many options available for cloth diapers. Donât get overwhelmed, I recommend you start by visiting a store to check out the different types of cloth diapers in person. This way you can get a better understanding of how they work and what best suits your baby.
For starters, check out the following:
Flat Diapers may have been a forgotten option, but they are back in style and here to stay! Most of them are 100% birdseye cotton, an absorbent and super-soft material that will keep your baby's delicate skin feeling comfy and snug.
They can also be customized to fit your diapering needs, plus they are an amazing value for budget-conscious moms! These are my diapers of choice.
Prefold diapers are flat cloths that have been folded a few times to create three panels of 2-3 layers. All you have to do is change out the soiled flat/prefold with a clean one, and voila â youâre good to go! I love using these to absorb leaks on the bed, which I learned as a tip for Elimination Communication from godiaperfree.com.
The diaper cover does not have a lining, making it easy to quickly wipe away any mess and reuse it for future diaper changes.
If youâre looking for a diaper that is as close to disposable as it gets, AIO diapers may be the solution for you! It is an all-in-one system that includes an absorbing layer that is built into the diaper and attached to a water-resistant cover that acts as a barrier.
You never have to worry about separate layers coming undone or wiggling around!
Where to Get Cloth Diapers?
You don't need to invest a big chunk of money when you first start. Consider borrowing from friends or browsing social media pages of various brands, as they often call for testers. Ultimately, it all comes down to your (and your baby's) preference.
I get my babyâs gear from Green Mountain Diapers! You can get almost everything from them with guided instructions on how to use each item.
Donât forget about your babyâs cute bum, too! I am taking extra care of my babyâs skin using eco-friendly products from The Honest Company and doTERRA.
If youâre still a bit confused on what to get, hereâs what I recommend:
Pro tip with newborns! Making sure you have enough diapers on hand is a must. Youâll want to have at least 25 cloth diapers available so you donât need to do laundry every day. That way, you wonât be constantly running to the washing machine and can enjoy some extra mom time.
What are the Best Products for Laundering Cloth Diapers?
Youâll also need to consider the amount of time youâre willing to put into laundering the diapers. Itâs important to adhere to laundry instructions to ensure that the diapers stay in good condition and remain hygienic.
For detergent options, my go-to stores are doTERRA and AspenClean!
