3 Ways to Protect Your Baby's Bottom from Diaper Rash

Moms, are you seeing red? Has your little one’s skin become sore, scaly, and tender? It’s probably a diaper rash! Don't panic though - diaper rash is a common condition and can be cleared with a few simple steps.

There are different causes of diaper rash but moisture and friction caused by urine and poop sitting in the diaper are usually the culprits, so to help prevent it, try following these few simple steps to keep your baby's skin healthy and rash-free!

Keep Your Baby's Bottom Rash-Free in 3 Ways

1. Don’t Leave Soiled Diapers on Too Long

You know how important it is to keep your baby’s bottom dry and clean. But sometimes, even with the most diligent care, diaper rashes can occur. While it can be tough to keep your baby's diaper area clean and dry all the time, it's essential for preventing and treating diaper rashes.

Moms, when it's time to change your baby's diaper, start cleaning the area with a soft cloth and water.

Wipes are also useful but remember, these rashes can be painful and hard to get rid of, so avoid rubbing the skin too hard, and don't use wipes with alcohol. This can help to avoid irritating the skin further.

2. Try Some Diaper-Free Time

Moms know that cloth diapers can be a great way to help keep babies comfortable! Be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions on how to clean them.

Detergent is necessary for cleaning cloth diapers so you may want to use those that are safe for your baby’s skin. Check my blog for tips on how to best launder them here!

It’s also no secret that cloth diapers have many benefits, but when diaper rash strikes, you might want to try a little diaper-free time. You can set them up on some towels or absorbent pads and just let their little bums air out. 🙂

3. Protect your Baby’s Skin with Soothing Creams

You did everything to prevent diaper rashes, and it still happened?

Don’t worry, Mom! Our next step is to soothe them if they occur!

Zinc-based pastes and barrier creams are excellent options for doing just that. Head on to EWG’s site to check for verified Diaper Cream products.

It is a blend of Lavender, Carrot Seed, and Tea Tree essential oils that helps soothe my baby’s skin. What’s great about it is it has been tested for sensitive skin and gives off a light, clean scent!

Once you’ve changed the diaper, apply this cream liberally and as often as necessary, particularly at bedtime or when your baby will be in a wet diaper for a prolonged time

Are you also a mom who loves to DIY? How about making your Diaper Rash Cream with essential oils? You’ll only need three ingredients and follow the steps:

Ingredients

Instructions:
  1. Start by melting your coconut oil in a glass cup, either using a microwave or double boiler.
  2. Once melted, add the essential oils and stir briefly.
  3. Allow the mixture to cool to restore the original consistency of the coconut oil.
  4. Store in a sealable glass container and leave in a cool place.

Although diaper rashes can look red, irritated, and painful, they rarely cause discomfort for your baby and can usually be treated with topical treatments.

However, if you suspect a nasty infection, it's probably time to call your pediatrician! Signs of an infected diaper rash include very red skin, warmth to the touch, and possibly even pus. So if you spot any of these, your pediatrician will be the best person to treat it.
