Postpartum Healing Guide: Tips for Nurturing Your Body After Birth

Congratulations, new mom! You've embarked on an incredible journey filled with love, joy, and, let's be honest, a whirlwind of emotions postpartum.

As you navigate the beautiful world of motherhood, it's important to remember that taking care of yourself is just as vital as caring for your precious bundle of joy.

Postpartum is a time of immense physical and emotional changes. Your body has undergone a miraculous transformation, and your heart is overflowing with love for your little one.

However, amidst the wonder and excitement, it's crucial to acknowledge the hurdles you may face during this phase.

Physical recovery, sleep deprivation, hormonal fluctuations, and adjusting to a new routine can take a toll on your well-being. It's during these moments that self-care becomes not just a luxury but a necessity.

This is why nurturing your body after giving birth is an act of self-love and a vital component of your overall well-being!

Self-care Tips for Postpartum Moms

In the whirlwind of caring for your newborn, it's easy to put your own needs on the back burner. I’m here to say that self-care isn't selfish; it's an investment in your own physical and emotional health.

By taking care of yourself, you're better equipped to care for your baby and enjoy the journey of motherhood to the fullest.

So, how can you prioritize self-care during this transformative time?

In this blog, we'll explore various tips and practices for nurturing your body after birth. From postpartum healing support to soothing routines and self-care practices, here is your ultimate guide on your journey of self-discovery and self-care.

Tip #1: Rest and Recovery

The postpartum period is a time of immense physical and emotional adjustments as you welcome your little one into the world.

It’s also the most tiring, energy-draining, and sleepless phase a new mom could ever go through. In the midst of it, it is easy to fall into the trap of just taking care of the baby and forgetting ourselves.

Your body needs physical healing, quality sleep, and support with hormonal imbalances!

Create a comfortable and calming sleep space. Use soft, breathable bedding, dim the lights, and maintain a temperature conducive to sleep. Consider using lavender, Balance®, or Serenity® essential oil blend in a diffuser to create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. You can also apply them to your pulse points to get that calmness you need.

And nap when your baby naps!

As tempting as it may be to tackle chores or catch up on other tasks during your baby's nap time, prioritize your own rest. Nap when your baby naps to ensure you're getting much-needed rest throughout the day.

Tip #2: Proper Nutrition and Hydration

Next tip is to make sure you get the proper nutrition and hydration.

Physical health affects EVERYTHING, so don’t let yourself go hangry or thirsty, especially if you’re a lactating mom!

Make sure you include nutrient-dense foods into your diet like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

Staying hydrated is vital too, especially if you're breastfeeding. So aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day to replenish fluids lost during childbirth and support optimal hydration. If going out, make sure you carry a water bottle with you!

Here’s a pro tip: Aim for regular, balanced meals and snacks throughout the day to maintain stable blood sugar levels and sustain energy. Consider having healthy snacks readily available to fuel your body between meals, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Trust me, you NEED it.

Pay attention to your hunger and fullness cues. Eat when you're hungry and stop when you're satisfied. It's important to nourish yourself adequately but avoid overeating or restricting your food intake.

If you need it, consult with a healthcare professional for personalized guidance on your diet. They can provide recommendations based on your individual circumstances.

Tip #3: Gentle Exercise and Movement

Aside from sleep and rest, engaging in safe and effective exercises not only aids in your recovery but also strengthens your body and boosts your energy levels.

It helps improve circulation, promote healing, and restore muscle strength and tone, helping in physical recovery after childbirth

Gentle exercises also combat postpartum fatigue, as it releases endorphins, which boost mood and energy, helping you feel more invigorated throughout the day.

Exercise has a positive impact on mental health, reducing stress and promoting a sense of well-being, acting as a mood booster during the postpartum period.

Here are some safe and effective exercises for postpartum strengthening:

Pelvic Floor Exercises

Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles is crucial after childbirth. Perform gentle pelvic floor exercises, also known as Kegels, to support bladder control and restore pelvic floor strength. Consult a healthcare professional for proper guidance.

Walking

Walking is a low-impact exercise that can be easily incorporated into your routine. Start with short walks and gradually increase the duration and intensity as you feel comfortable. It helps improve cardiovascular fitness and promotes overall well-being.

Postnatal Yoga or Pilates

Consider attending postnatal yoga or Pilates classes tailored for new moms. These exercises focus on strengthening core muscles, improving flexibility, and promoting relaxation. Ensure the classes are specifically designed for postpartum women.

Strength Training with Light Weights

Engage in strength-training exercises using light weights or resistance bands to gradually rebuild muscle strength. Focus on exercises that target major muscle groups, such as squats, lunges, bicep curls, and shoulder presses. Start with light resistance and gradually increase as you regain strength.

If you experience muscle soreness or discomfort during your postpartum exercise routine, Deep Blue® rub can provide soothing relief.

This proprietary blend combines powerful essential oils like wintergreen, peppermint, and camphor to help ease muscle soreness and promote a sense of comfort.

Apply Deep Blue® Rub topically to the affected area after exercise for a cooling and soothing effect. I love it!

Tip #4: Skincare and Self-Care Rituals

Just because you’re a mom doesn’t mean you can’t continue your natural skin care routines and self-care rituals! Actually, it’s the best time to continue doing them.

So here are some things to keep in mind to keep your skincare up and running even after giving birth.
  • Opt for gentle and natural skincare products that are free from harsh chemicals, fragrances, and irritants. Look for products with minimal ingredients or consider making your own skincare remedies using simple and natural ingredients.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and support your skin's natural healing process. Incorporate foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, such as fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats, to nourish your skin from within.
  • Moisturize your skin daily with natural and nourishing products. Look for ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and aloe vera, which can help soothe and hydrate dry or irritated skin.
Here’s a bonus relaxing essential oil recipe especially for new moms!
Dilute this blend in a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil or sweet almond oil, and use it during your self-care rituals.
Apply a few drops to your palms, inhale the aroma, and gently massage onto your face, neck, or other areas of your body in circular motions.

Embrace the power of natural ingredients and the soothing effects of essential oils, allowing your skin to heal and flourish in the gentlest and most nurturing way possible, mom!

Tip #5: Seek Support and Connection

Becoming a new mom is an incredible journey filled with joy, love, and moments of pure magic.

However, it's also a time of adjustment and learning as you navigate the challenges and uncertainties that come with caring for a newborn.

In this transformative period, it's important to recognize the value of connecting with other new moms and seeking professional support when needed.

Somehow, it’s amazing that the load lightens when you know that you’re not alone on this journey. It’s like having a support system where you can openly share your feelings and seek guidance too.

New moms can learn so much from one another! Each mother brings a unique perspective and knowledge that can be invaluable.

Whether it's sharing breastfeeding tips, sleep strategies, or simply offering a listening ear, the exchange of wisdom among new moms can be incredibly empowering.

And remember, seeking professional help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Embrace the opportunity to build a support network, whether it's through mom groups, online communities, or local organizations.

Be open to reaching out for professional help when necessary, knowing that you're taking proactive steps toward your own growth and the best possible care for your baby.

Embrace the Changes and Be Patient with Yourself

Mom, you deserve all the love, care, and support as you navigate this transformative chapter of your life.

Embrace the importance of self-care, prioritize your well-being, and remember that by nurturing yourself, you're nurturing the beautiful connection between you and your baby.

Welcome to the incredible world of motherhood, where love knows no bounds, and self-care is a foundation for a fulfilling and joyful journey ahead!

Share this with a new momma and let her know that she’s not alone in the journey, and that it’s time to give herself extra TLC!
